Over the break, we thought it would be useful if we researched what some of the “experts” around the world were predicting for decorating for 2010.
It was actually very amusing, and the outcome of the reading was honestly… what a lot of rubbish. Each individual company might have their own idea, but then it vastly differs from another expert, and ultimately, we decided…. ANYTHING GOES!
Be bold in making a decision about what you want. Do you want a nice natural space, or something vibrant and colourful? Get ideas from the web and magazines and then go forth and decorate. It is really that simple!
We have summarised below some of the key points told to us by colour and decorating experts!
Resene
Paints:
Well Resene started off well by explaining
that the strong push for sustainability has become a personal responsibility
for each of us. Nice. True.
But after that predications got confused as even they were tripping over
their metaphors in an attempt to describe the new “green”. Apparently there is a shift away from basic
earthiness (contradiction from previous statement) towards the warmth of copper
brown (WTF?), then a shift from gold to yellow, and with oranges and pinks “packing
some punch”. Then they come back to the
green, talking about “brown enhanced golds” and “warmed yellow greens” with “rich dusty greens
growing in popularity”.
It then goes on to explain that “ESCAPE” remains top of mind (as opposed to sustainability earlier in the piece), but we think it was really to push their new range of aquamarine blues!
IKEA:
IKEA’s new catalogue for 2010 gives you
lots of ideas and theme for 2010 is “Love your home”.
Three key areas where we spend most of our time- the living room, the kitchen and the bedroom are highlighted. New design trends were also unveiled such as different shades of grey, rich walnut and dark finishes, soft natural and organic shapes versus hard structured lines as well as dramatic graphic patterns.
We like this!
HomeStyle
magazine:
Mixing interesting colours, objects and textures from different cultures in
a way that works.
So we have slick modern interiors which are decorated with antique Moroccan lanterns and artifacts, or beautiful Japanese traditional fabrics and colours.
One of the strong themes that has been identified by the ISCD is Vintage Value, where we embrace objects and finishes that are timeworn and handmade with a sense of history to them.
Mosaic is another theme that is emerging, which is about developing our personal decorating style through travel and observations of different countries and cultures around the world.
In order to stay on top of the trends but at an affordable price, it’s recommended to buy small pieces to update the look of your room such as cushions, vases, or small pieces of art.
While making sure the colour and design of the interior is up-to-date, it’s important to have the outdoor area just as smart. Entertaining guests is a big part of the Australian lifestyle and one of the most popular leisure activities for most people during summer. With this in mind architects have started incorporating indoor/outdoor areas in house plans. For many, it has become an extension of the house itself.
Taubmans:
Taking a totally different angle from Resene, Taubmans trend prediction for
2010:
Go grey. Grey is the new white.
Grey, grey, grey from charcoal to smokey pale, it's the colour direction that's the hit for 2010. Greys are great to decorate with because so many shades work well with greys. And greys come in so many looks, tinted with blue or green, earthy or steely; all livable.
Dulux:
So then we moved to Dulux and they say:
Dulux Australia's Colour Forecast is
as dynamic as it is insightful, drawing on the latest global colour trends to
provide a source of ongoing inspiration.
Each palette displays a very different
personality and represents our extensive research of global fashion, design and
architecture trends.
Our research behind the six key colour
palettes for 2009/2010 is also supported by exclusive trend forecasting insight
from internationally renowned experts, The Future Laboratory.
And that was it, minus the actual palette, so actually it is just another fantastic piece of expert spin”. We especially like the term, “The Future Laboratory”.
Pantone:
Pantone have announced that PANTONE®
15-5519 Turquoise is the Color of the Year for 2010.
Combining the serene qualities of blue and the invigorating aspects of green, Turquoise evokes thoughts of soothing, tropical waters and a languorous, effective escape from the everyday troubles of the world, while at the same time restoring our sense of wellbeing.
