1-Clustering
For some reason when we have small decorating items such as pillows and smaller artworks we immediately think that if we scatter them in different corners of the room or one on each wall then that will create an “effect”. Another reason for this is the notion of spreading the decoration as widely as possible.
The reality is that you are better off “grouping” the smaller items. For the pictures group them together, larger ones at the bottom, smaller ones above. The same applies for pillows (obviously or you wouldn’t see the smaller ones!). Also when grouping smaller pictures if you place them asymmetrically and neatly they will appear more formal. For a relaxed arty look you can arrange them slightly off kilter.
2- Placement
It is commonly mentioned that artwork should be placed with the centre of the artwork at eye level. If this works for you then absolutely apply this method. However, remember that some of the most amazing designs are those that break convention. Be brave and experiment! With bookshelves and cupboards and beds etc so very different in every home, some places with picture rails, some without; the options are endless so experiment with what you feel comfortable with.
3-Themes
Experts agree that one should look for connections in either hues or in subject matter when decorating the home. Look for themes in pictures, whether they are photographs of paintings, or select items for hanging that have complimentary colours.
